The postgraduate Orthodontics program at AIHS

is a two year program that emphasizes the clinical aspects of the specialty and awards a Certificate in Orthodontics and Dentofacial Orthopedics. A student/resident also may choose to take a three year program leading to a Certificate and Masters of Science Degree. Eight residents are admitted to the program on a yearly basis, and a majority of the residents enroll in the two year program. The PG orthodontic program is accredited by the ADA Commission on Dental Accreditation for Advanced Specialty Education Programs in Orthodontics and Dentofacial Orthopedics. Residents are trained in all aspects of clinical orthodontics designed to prepare them for a private practice setting. Areas of training/study include, but are not limited to, adult treatment, treatment of the adolescent, early and interceptive treatment, orthognathic surgery, TMD, cleft lip and palate and craniofacial anomalies, and dentofacial orthopedics. Contemporary technology, such as digital radiography, digital imaging, digital diagnostic records, and the electronic patient record are integrated into the program. Emphasis is placed on the treatment of patient cases to Board standards, and residents are well prepared to achieve Board certification. This emphasis stems, in part, from the department having a faculty member who was a past Director of the American Board of Orthodontics and Chair of the Department. As such, all students are required to take Phase II (written) of the American Board of Orthodontics certification examination and to become Board certified upon graduation.
